Dear friend
I thought that you might be interested in Bay Area Wilderness Training's Climbing for Kids event. This year we are pleased to offer summit attempts on the two tallest volcanoes in the lower 48.
-Mt. Shasta in Northern California from July 7-10, 2006
-Mt. Rainier in Washington State from August 11-14, 2006
Upon signing up for the program, you pledge to raise or contribute directly a minimum of $3,000 to climb Mt. Shasta or $3,200 to climb Mt. Rainier. You, in turn, will receive the gratification of helping Northern California urban youth experience the power and beauty of California's wilderness.
In recognition of your commitment to support urban youth, BAWT provides a substantial number of resources to help you have the best climb possible. Thanks to the generous support of some of the biggest names in the outdoor industry and our extensive gear library, we will provide all the gear you need for the climb (much of which is yours to keep).
Valued at approximately $1,200, the list of gear you get to keep includes an insulated jacket, shell jacket and pants, sleeping bag and pad, headlamp, glacier glasses, internal frame pack, gaiters, trekking poles, and much more.
Our contributing sponsors include: Outside Magazine, Gu Sports, Osprey, Outdoor Research, LEKI, Princeton Tec, Cocoon, Pacific Outdoor Equipment, Big Agnes, Suunto, Auclair, Mountain Hardwear, and Julbo.
BAWT's mission is to create opportunities for urban youth to experience wilderness first hand. BAWT accomplishes this by training youth educators and providing youth groups with access to quality outdoor equipment. To date, BAWT has reached over 3,745 youth, eighty percent of which are from minority backgrounds, and has created outdoor education programs within hundreds of schools and youth serving agencies around the Bay Area.
In addition to providing all of the gear for the climb, BAWT supports you through weekend trainings and pre-trip meetings including support in every aspect of sponsorship solicitation and administrative backup. Moreover, BAWT provides access to professional personal trainers, professional mountain guides who will lead your climb, technical training with ice axes and crampons, and all food during the climb.
The proceeds from both climbs go to support BAWT programs for youth and youth leaders. Eighty percent of climb sponsorship funds go directly towards BAWT program delivery. The other twenty percent covers climb costs, guide fees, and BAWT staffing to make the climb possible.
The Climbing for Kids website (www.climbingforkids.org) is a fantastic resource. The website provides a comprehensive overview of everything related to the Mt. Shasta and Mt. Rainier climbs. On the website, you will be able to find specific information about both mountains, the certified professional guide services, fundraising suggestions, an extensive FAQ's section, photos and video from previous climbs, a registration page, and much more.
You have the chance of a lifetime to tackle a personal goal and challenge, and to make it possible for urban youth to have similar experiences -- many for the first time -- through their own, unique wilderness adventures.
For more information about the Climbing for Kids event, please access the updated climber packet, which is filled with details including an exhaustive packing list, registration form, and training advice. The climber packet can be found at the following website: http://www.bawt.org/climbforkids/
Thank you again for your interest in helping Northern California urban youth get out of the city and into the woods.
Feel free to contact us at any time with questions or concerns. Moreover, please pass this e-mail along to anyone who you think might be interested in Climbing for Kids. See you on the mountain!
Sincerely,
